Description according Matthiesen Gallery:
The present picture shows his dramatically modeleld trees and tangible rays of light in optima forma. Moreover, the very idiosyncratic way the various foliage are executed is highly characteristic for De Keuninck. The figures are painted by the master himself. They are stylistically in keeping with those who usually inhabit De Keuninck’s landscapes (Cfr. especially Devisscher, op. cit., nos A5 (colourpl. 1), A13, A15). Only four of the about sixty extant pictures by the master are dated: dates occur on paintings from 1610 (two) 1627 and 1630. This makes it difficult to establish a chronological development for the works of the artist. The present painting is, however, stylistically related to the two paintings from 1610 (Devisscher, op. cit., nos Al and A2) and therefore a similar date seems likely.
Kerstiaen de Keuninck painted the subject The temptation of St. Anthony at least once more. In a painting, with an oblong format, in the Koninklijk Museum in Antwerp (inv. 5078; Devisscher, op. cit. nos A15) the same subject matter is depicted.
