Hartlaub judges favourably on the writings of Wilhelm Fraenger, but he rejects the interpretations of C.A. Wertheim Aymès, which are based on the symbolism of the Rosicrucians. Nicolas Calas’s book about the Garden of Delights is briefly mentioned as well. Eventually, Hartlaub thinks that Bosch was a moralist and a satirist who chose the side of the Church. One wonders: why then the favourable opinion on Fraenger?
