Many of Bosch’s scenes can be explained with the help of contemporary literature and by means of late-medieval customs and habits, such as processions, parades, theatrical performances and so on. The caricatural character of a lot of Bosch’s figures (particularly in his Passion scenes) was influenced by the processions in his hometown with their actors dressed in unusual clothes, their faces covered by weird masks.
