The painting is based on the eponymous painting in the National Museum of Ancient Art in Liassabon. There are about 25 similar compositions all of followers known.

On november 10, 1911, lot no. 61 and, as a Jheronmius, from the collection of Gustav von Gerhardt Budapest-auctioned by Lepke in Berlin, germany. In 1935, due to Friedlander spotted by art dealer Martin Porkay, Munich and in 1936, from the collection of the Hultén in Stockholm, sweden. In the ca. In 1948 came from the New York-based art Dealer Schäffer, and eventually, by Dr. Clowes, the Clowes Fund Collection of the Museum.
