By Jan Provoost are several (partly) similar paintings known, namely in the Groeningemuseum in Bruges, the Fogg Museum in Cambridge (Massachusetts), the Hamburger Kunsthalle and in this Museum.

History:
In 1883 owned by art dealer Christianus J. Nieuwenhuys in Brussels / London (auctioned in Brussels). That same year, it came into the possession of James E. Scripps, who likely donated it to the Detroit Institute of Arts immediately afterwards.
