The scene at the bottom right, with the clergy in hell, illustrating deadly sins, was painted over by Pieter Porbus in 1550, commissioned by the magistrate and pursuant to an edict of Charles V. This overpainting was removed in 1956 by C. Leegenhoek, restorer.

History:

In 1525 by Jan Provoost for the Council Chamber of the Town Hall of Bruges. In 1828 transferred to the Museum.The magistrate to the nominated had to remember his duty to justice. Earlier adaptations were removed in 1956.By Jan Provoost are three similar paintings known, namely in the Detroit Institute of Art, the Fogg Museum in Cambridge (Massachusetts), and the Hamburger Kunsthalle.
