Note: Although no original with a similar design by Bosch has survived, it is reasonable to assume that either a painting or drawing by him served as a prototype for the present engraving; see M. Friedländer, 'Altniederländische Malerei V: Geertgen van Haarlem und Hieronymus Bosch', Berlin, 1927, p.129b. A similar composition can be found in Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, in the Noordbrabants Museum in's-Hertogenbosch and in Albertina in Vienna. A colored version is in the possession of an unknown owner in Corella in Spain and in Palazzo Pitti in Florence (Firenze).
