Also called 'Shroved Tuesday' or 'Dance of the fools'.
Inscription, bottom centre: Dit is den dans van Luther met zijn nonne (This is the dance of Luther with his nun)
At the lavish carnival follows the austere Lent. In this painting, this somewhat reluctantly. The antics headgear public back indicate an exuberant party mood. Fasting appears like a fish on the round table on the right. Meat was forbidden food for believers since. The sarcastic caption "This is the dance of Luther with his nonne" a swipe to the Protestant Church.
