In Hieronymus Bosch’s antic vision of the world, appearances were often deceiving. Here Saint Martin’s pious act of dividing his cloak to clothe a naked beggar takes place within a chaotic panorama of beggars of all types—both those genuinely afflicted by deprivation and disease and mere charlatans.
Similar creations can be seen for example in the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (colored version RP-P-OB-103.852), the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne and the British Museum in London.
