Before 1779 in possession of Maarten Bowier in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, than, any case before 1828 in possession of Florent van Ertborn in Utrecht. In 1841 or 1848 as legate to the Museum.

The painting is a copy of the eponymous central panel in the Museo Arte Antiga in Lisbon, of which a dozen of copy's by Followers are made. Signed on the bottom right in Gothic letters ‘Jheronimus bosch’.
