Before 1936 the painting had been spotted at the art dealership or private collection of Godfroy Brauer in Nice and the private collection of J. Kerr Lawson in London. In 1936 it was at the Max Hevesi Gallery in Vienna until it was put up for auction by an anonymous owner in 1982 at Sotheby Parke Benett in New York City. There it was placed on March 22, 1984, lot no. 10 auctioned, as a painting from the studio of Hieronymus Bosch.
