The painting is based on the painting of the same name in the Prado. Almost identical copies can be found in the Musée Benoit de Puydt in Bailleul, the Strahov Gallery in Prague, at the 1930 auction by Heilbing in Berlin, at the Christies auction in London (1983) and New York (2004)
The central scene in this painting is based on what may be an autograph version by Bosch of the subject of The Extraction of the Stone of Folly in Madrid with the inscription ‘Meester snijt de keye ras // Mijne name is lubbert das’ (Master, cut the stone out quickly. My name is Lubbert Das ‘Doltish Ninny’)
