According the website of the Museuem: According to the story of Athanasius popularized in the 13th century by the Golden Legend, the panel stages one of the temptations of Saint Anthony. Absent from reading the Scriptures, the old man is seated in the hollow of a tree in his improvised hermitage. The tempting demon appears to him in the form of an anthropomorphic monster wearing a strange hood. He presents her with food in precious containers, emblematic of material wealth, and offers her the attractions of an indecent courtesan whom he strips off to incite her to lust. The staging is part of a fashion for the representation of the Temptations of Saint Anthony which, prompted by the "inventio" of Jheronimus Bosch, developed in the 1510s on the Antwerp market and testifies to a more general taste for themes combining the strange and the erotic.
