The Bosch Exhibition (’s-Hertogenbosch, 1967) has become a big success, partially thanks to an excellent publicity campaign. According to Gerlach this success is deserved. The carefully edited catalogue and the Bijlagen are valuable instruments for those who wish to become more familiar with the Master.
The most important impression Gerlach has gathered from the exhibition is that Bosch – probably raised in a ‘family of miniaturists’ – was himself a miniaturist ‘on a large scale’. He also hopes that Bosch’s name will be cleansed from everything that Fraenger and other ‘bunglers and dilettantes’ have written about him. Bosch was an ‘extremely Catholic artist’.
