Father Gerlach suggests a positive interpretation for the Garden of Delights, whereas Marijnissen (in the same book) considers it a warning of the sin of Luxuria. According to Gerlach the central panel represents the paradisiacal life of mankind before the Fall of Adam and Eve. Gerlach also extensively writes about the literary and visual sources that may have influenced Bosch (or his patrons).
