The first in a series of seven short articles in which Gerlach presents an iconographical analysis of the Prado Tabletop, in particular of the Seven Deadly Sins scenes. In this introductory article Gerlach offers a survey of what has been written about the Tabletop in the past and he also refers to what Felipe de Guevara says about the Tabletop in his Comentarios de la Pintura. As opposed to what he thought earlier Gerlach now thinks that Guevara does not attribute the Tabletop to a Bosch pupil. Gerlach now believes that the Tabletop is a very typical Bosch work and he wonders whether Bosch painted it for his own use.
