Merten 1988
Hieronymus Bosch (Ernst Merten) 1988
[Berghaus Verlag, Kirchdorf-Inn, 1988, 135 pages]
Merten is still as cautious and careful as in 1976 (see Merten 1976). Bosch’s paintings are painted sermons and clearly contain a folkloristic ànd an esoteric element. In his rather superficial discussions of a number of paintings Merten agrees with now one and then another of the traditional Bosch studies (and once in a while also with Fraenger). The quality of the illustrations is not very high but they are nicely edited.
