“The Mocking of Christ, by Hieronymus Bosch” (Claude Phillips) 1910
[in: The Burlington Magazine, vol. XVII (1910), nr. 85, pp. 321-327]
[Also mentioned in Gibson 1983: 81 (E52)]
In this article Phillips introduces a recently surfaced panel of the ‘great Netherlandish humorist’ Hieronymus Bosch that was immediately recognized by the ‘connoisseurs’ as a work of the painter from ’s-Hertogenbosch, ‘genuine beyond the possibility of doubt’.
This panel is the Ecce Homo which is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art today. It is quite obviously not an authentic Bosch painting.
