In the year 1600 emperor Rudolf II purchased the series of tapestries after paintings of Bosch that was formerly owned by cardinal Granvelle. It are probably these tapestries (and not the ones owned by Alva) that are in the Spanish Patrimonio Nacional today. Contemporary inventories point out that Rudolf also owned some twenty paintings by or after Bosch. After Philip II Rudolf II was apparently the major collector of Bosch paintings in the period circa 1600.
