Note: The painting is based on the right panel ‘Hel’ from the Garden of Earthly Delights in the Prado in Madrid, combined with the Last Judgment in the Gemäldegalerie der Akademie der Bildende Künste in Vienna.

A similar composition is on display at Schulthess in Basel (Triptych, see below in black/white) and at Christies in New York in 1995 and Sotheby’s in New York in 2010.

History:

In 1870 was the painting in Lucerne (Luzern) at Pfyffer, afterwards at Davis and Mrs. Davis-Hekekian Paschaich in Zurich. Bequeathed to the Museum in 1936. The painting is based on the right panel 'The Hel' from 'the Garden of Earthly Delights' at the Prado in Madrid, combined with 'the Last Judgement' in the Gemaldegalerie der Akademie der Bildende Kunste in Vienna. A similar compostion is on display at Schulthess in Basel and at Christies in New York in 1995 and Sotheby's in New York in 2010. The color photo comes from the book 'the Unknown Hieronymus Bosch' by Kurt Falk!
