The catalogue of the successful 1967 Bosch exhibition. It is pointed out that Bosch’s oeuvre generates divergent interpretations and hypotheses. Many aspects of his art have not yet been studied in a satisfactory way. There is the riddle of his themes and sources. There is the issue of his training and the possible link with an urban tradition and with Dutch painting in general. There is the issue of chronology and of the different versions of some works, including replicas by Bosch’s own hand, workshop replicas and copies of (sometimes lost) works. And there is the issue of Bosch’s influence on later artists and of the importance the interpetation of their work may have for a better understanding of the master’s oeuvre. The catalogue does not offer a solution for any of these issues, it only tries to give a résumé of the most relevant ideas and discussions.
The editors have given the catalogue a thematical structure. Separate chapters are spent on the ‘legends of the saints’, the ‘life of Christ’, the ‘Passion of Christ’, the ‘moralizing works’ and ‘the world of the Four Last Things’. The drawings are brought together in another chapter and finally the reader is offered a (rather superficial) survey of sources, context and influence. At the back of the catalogue a very comprehensive bibliography up to 1967.
