“Bosch en Bruegel vertaald” (Bert D’Haese) 1976

[in: De Standaard der Letteren, 3 december 1976]

[Not mentioned in Gibson 1983]

In this newspaper article D’Haese tries to show that Bosch and Bruegel used the egg as a symbol for the dangers of wealth and luxury by referring to a number of Bruegel’s prints. In the hell of the Garden of Delights the beggar with an egg on his back would then depict the Dutch proverb het zijn sterke benen die de weelde dragen kunnen (it are strong legs that can carry wealth). The singers in the Lille Concert in an Egg are headstrong as a result of too much wealth.
