In 2016, the Bosch Research and Conservation Project (BRCP) attributed the Ghent Carring of the Cross panel to a follower of Bosch, but the Ghent Museum of Fine Arts still claims that it is an original Bosch. Based on his material-technical research, Hoogstede now argues that it is highly improbable that Bosch was the painter. His major argument seems to be that the panel was apparently meant for a rabbet frame and not for an engaged frame, which means that the panel was painted before a frame was attached to it: paint has been applied to the panel including its edges. According to the author, rabbet frames came into use only from the second quarter of the sixteenth century on (and Bosch died in 1516).
