Le Moulin des tentations – Une lecture de La Tentation de saint Antoine, première moitié du XVIe siècle, copie d’après Jérôme Bosch, musée des Augustins, Hazebrouck (Michel Ménaché) 2010

The Musée des Augustins in Hazebrouck (France) has a sixteenth-century copy of Bosch’s St Anthony triptych (Lisbon) on loan from the Louvre. Remarkable: the painting only copies the interior wings, which have been united (with some variations in the details) into one panel. Michel Ménaché wrote a short monograph about this copy but unfortunately, he has opted for a pseudo-poetical approach, resulting in 32 pages of woolly and insipid text. When some more information is given about Bosch’s life at the end of the book, the first sentence already has three errors: ‘De son vrai nom Hieronymus Van Haken, Jérôme Bosch naît en 1453 à S’Hertogenbosch aux Pays-Bas’ (p. 35). It should be Van Aken, ‘in 1453’ should be ‘around 1450’ and ’s-Hertogenbosch is spelled wrong. The only merit of this booklet is that it brings to our notice the copy in Hazebrouck, with some illustrations (of poor quality).
